Daisie Conway

"Putting your own music out there is a vulnerable and emotional experience. You are letting people hear parts of your heart through your songs. Sharing this with people can be scary, but it’s important to keep believing in yourself and the music you make. The best thing you can be is your true self and that’s reflected in your music. Never believe it’s not enough because it could change someone’s life hearing your music!!"

Up n’ Comin NI is thrilled to introduce this week’s artist, 21-year-old, singer-songwriter, Daisie Conway. Daisie has attracted regional and international media attention, having appeared on several TV, Radio, Magazines and Newspapers both in the UK, Ireland and the USA. Some notable examples include: UTV Life, The Gerry Kelly Show, Jim Masters Show USA, BBC Introducing, BBC Radio Ulster, U105, Belfast Telegraph, Belfast Live, Ulster Tatler, Local Woman Magazine and many more. “I have opened for artists such as Brian Kennedy, Hothouse Flowers, Eddi Reader and duetted with Andrea Begley.” She also opened for The Henry Girls in Carlingford and duetted with Zoë Conway.

Daisie is no stranger to the stage. She was invited to perform at a champagne musical showcase in No.10 Downing Street. She was selected as 1 of 5 singer-songwriters for Kenneth Branagh’s ‘21 Artists for the 21st Century’ programme where she worked with Jealous of the Birds singer, Naomi Hamilton and Declan Legge. She was also selected for the 2023 Soft Gut Song Camp run by Ciaran Lavery, being compared to the “early work of Taylor Swift!” Last year she headlined at ‘The Friends Goodwill’ Festival and performed on stage at ‘Mela’ Festival in Belfast.

She was also a finalist in the UK Songwriting Contest which was being judged by GRAMMY, EMMY, BRIT and CMA panel members. She also ended up winning the IYMC Songwriter of the Year in 2021.

As well as all these awards, Daisie is the NI charity ambassador for Muscular Dystrophy UK and performed at a MacMillain Cancer Support Charity Fashion Show where she helped raise over £8k in donations.

If that doesn’t sound like she is busy enough, outside of music she is also a student primary school teacher, studying at Queen’s University Belfast!

“Music has always been a part of my life. I come from a musical family and there’s always music in my house. I started playing piano at 5, violin at 6 and I taught myself guitar (with my granda) and ukulele in lockdown. I grew up singing and playing music in Irish pubs and festivals across the island of Ireland and achieved a couple of musical Grade 8 exams. I didn’t start posting my singing for anyone to see until the first lockdown in April 2020… I was super shy. But in lockdown I posted a video of myself singing a Mamma Mia cover online of the song ‘I’ve been waiting for you’ which went viral!”

Her favourite artist, as you may have guessed from before, is Taylor Swift. “I love how listening to her lyrics is like reading a diary of her life. I’ve been inspired by this relatable songwriting technique, and I love to create songs which other people can relate to when they hear them. It’s something that I love about music. It means we can all connect through the emotions put into the songwriting and know we’re in this together which is such a beautiful thing.”

“I love writing songs about feelings and things that I go through. Hopefully someone out there relates to them!! I hope you like my music as much as I like making it!”

One thing that makes Daisie different is that she always writes songs about her own life. “It really helps with the creative process as I can put my genuine emotions into the lyrics and melody of the song. It’s nearly like writing a diary to music.” Most of her songs are written at the piano or on the guitar. “Sometimes the lyrics come first, sometimes the melody. It all just depends on the song and the inspiration I have. I actually started as a classical crossover artist, so I have evolved a lot since releasing my original songs. I try to incorporate my folk upbringing into my songs with the instruments and melodies I use. I then mix this with the popular styles of today to create my own unique sound.”

“My upcoming original song Lighthouse draws on my experiences of someone making me feel safe, loved and calm again, which was such a lovely feeling to have. We all have a Lighthouse in our lives.”

Daisie enjoys working both by herself and with collaborators. “I write all of my original material myself and work with producers and musicians in the studio to bring it to life which involves collaboration.” As well as this, Daisie has worked on collaboration projects with other artists such as the Kenneth Branagh’s 21 Artists for the 21st Century project in 2021 where they helped create an EP.

“The charity events are my proudest achievements. Being able to raise so much money for such incredible charities is just incredible and I’m so proud to have been able to help their causes. I’m honoured to have been able to be a part of their work.

Daisie performs at weddings, awards ceremonies, festivals and charity events. This includes: The Young Enterprise Awards in Belfast City Hall, Mela Festival in Botanic Gardens in Belfast, Northern Ireland Consulate Diplomatic Dinner Gala in the Crowne Plazza, Muscular Dystrophy‘s Spirit of Christmas event in Stormont and MacMillan Cancer Support’s Charity Fashion Show in Alana Interiors.

“The most memorable gig I ever performed was in No.10 Downing Street. When I first got the email I thought it was a joke. We were flown to London, spent the day sightseeing and arrived at Downing Street for the performance. It was the night before my 20th birthday and I’ll never forget the audience in No.10 Downing Street singing happy birthday to me after my set.”

So, what’s next for Daisie Conway?

"My latest original single, Lighthouse, was released on June 5th. I’ve written the music to feel like a lazy summer’s day, relaxing and with a sense of warmth and happiness. I’m really excited for everyone to hear it!" As well as this, Daisie has a new collaboration single coming out in the summer and is currently writing for her first EP. If you want to see Daisie in action, she will be performing in the Mela Festival in August too.
