Eugene Greene

 “I am a bedroom writer and writer from the heart”. Eugene’s biggest focus is on “telling the truth and being honest within myself. I like to think of myself as a storyteller.”

Up n’ Comin’ NI is happy to present this week’s artist, Eugene Greene, singer/songwriter from Lurgan. 

 

Music has always been an important part of Eugene’s life. From a young age he played in bands as well as writing and performing his own music. “I have always enjoyed playing and get a buzz from it.” Eugene also did a lot of busking. He said that his “friends and family” were supportive and would often come hear him play. 

 

A lot of Eugene’s inspiration comes from iconic artists such as The Beatles, John Lennon and U2. The love of their music inspired the writing of his own which he describes as “Blues/ Soul/ Gospel and Rock n Roll.” 

 

Although Eugene used to play in bands, he told me that, “At the moment it’s just myself.” He did, however, follow that up saying, “Hopefully I can get more guys involved.” If you are a local musician who plays or writes music of a similar style, why not get in touch with Eugene and see what you can create together! 

 

“Be strong and believe in yourself while things aren’t going well” 

 

Eugene describes his songwriting process as “Melody first, then get some lyrics, but close yourself in the moment of songwriting.” It is always important to be in the right mindset when writing music as this allows you to produce your best work!

 

When discussing inspirations, Eugene tells me that the inspiration for his lyrics absolutely comes from his own experiences and his life. He says that he writes about, “Myself and other people worries. I get a lot of satisfaction through it. My latest song is about someone that is on their own and needs help. That's why I am doing this. I want to bring this to a wider audience.”

Eugene told me that his greatest achievement to date was when he “Got played on Amazing Radio in the U.K.” The radio station featured his song ‘California Sun is Rising’. “The song is about a man who is living in the United States on his own trying to survive.”

 

While Eugene tends to write and perform on his own, he says, “When I get some guy together to bring a song together, it’s like finishing a jigsaw puzzle: fantastic.”

 

Eugene used to perform gigs all of the time. Now, he says, “I mostly do podcasts.” This is an extremely interesting field for musicians to venture into as it is becoming more popular all the time. As well as this, however, Eugene does say that he plans to do more gigs “in the near future.” 

 

I asked Eugene about his favourite gig. He said, “I performed in a competition in Warrenpoint. It was a busking competition. I came second. I was over the moon with that one.” 

 

So, what is next for Eugene?

First and foremost, Eugene plans to continue “writing new material”, but as well as that he hopes to “get guys together to record some music and some podcasts.”
