Telezura

“We want to implement a new wave of music with our own sound. Recently we have been experimenting grunge with the alt rock scene to form our own sound and style. We feel we are not far from mastering it and we won’t rest until we are at the top.”

Up n’ Comin’ NI are happy to present our next artist, Telezura, from Derry. They are a 4-piece alternative rock band who describe themselves as, “Eager to be a big name in the music industry. Constantly writing original music and perfecting it.” The band consists of Jack Doherty, Adam Robinson, Ben McDermott and Conor Lynch.

Lots of musicians have found that they play in numerous bands before they find one that is the right fit for them. “We have all had previous projects in music and this one has seemed to be the best. We feel it’s inevitable that we keep going. We can’t sit back and watch others do it.

“Our drive is phenomenal. We really believe we are the most driven people, individually, towards music. As a band, nothing can stop us. Our creativity drives us to be better and different. There’s no room to be generic for us. We want to stand out.

So far, all of their music has been written by Adam, the lead guitarist. These pieces are inspired by Stone Roses, The Doors and Nirvana. “Adam’s creative process would be to spur of whatever you are feeling and what you see around you.” It is so important to be aware of your surroundings when writing music. Most of the time, this drives the emotion that the listener wants to hear. “Most of our songs are anecdotes of personal experiences that audiences can relate to. We couldn’t write about made up stories. Day-to-day life is so eventful. For it to be expressed through our music is so important to us, it’s a release.”

When Telezura started, they played a lot of indie rock, but that has progressed to a love of grunge since. “The plan is to take this grunge and give it a fresh sound that all can listen to. We feel it’s important to reach a wide audience and cater for all. We can’t wait to share this new sound."

While the band say “We know it may take 100 bad songs to write 1 amazing one” they follow that up with “We know what sounds good and what sounds bad. Lyrics are important to us. It’s our uniform. It’s expressing us as a band and how we feel."

“The band works in 4 ways. Everyone has a say. All of our songs are made like this. It brings 4 bursts of creativity to the table instead of 1.” A huge perk of being in a band is that you are constantly collaborating with the other members and bouncing ideas off each other. As well as this, however, you all have a similar goal for the sound of the band, creating a distinctive sound through the 4 different creative bursts.  In fact, the band have recently decided to do some 4-way writing to let everyone contribute further.

In terms of outside collaborations, they said “We prefer to work as a band with no outsiders as of now. We have found that the 4 of us are putting sweat and tears into the band and find it hard to process that anyone on the outside could do the same. We love doing promotions and working with other artists but as far as the music goes it’s for us 4 only for now.”

The band are still in their early stages, and as a result haven’t yet posted their new music on streaming platforms just yet. In saying that, the band have posted a teaser on their Instagram page. They also plan to do a live session in the next month or two with a couple of their new songs, “we want that to be perfect.”

“Something that stands out to us is the saying, 'Play to 5 people as you would play to 5,000.’ It keeps us grounded and keeps our eyes on the prize.”

The band played their debut gig in Bennigans in October. “It went down a treat. We drew a lot of attraction and we were made aware of how well we sounded.” In fact, they went on to tell me it has been their favourite gig to date. “The atmosphere of our first gig, the nerves, uncertainty and support was amazing. This will be hard to top for us. We had no expectations and left very happy. We have had crazy support and are so grateful. Gigs are all about the audience enjoying the tunes.

Following that, they played Granny Annie’s with Switch and Tramp. The band were thrilled to play this venue with two other brilliant bands. “Our proudest achievement so far is the fast growth of the band. We played our first gig and got a second one week later. This fast-paced movement makes us so proud. All of our work has paid off and will continue to as long as we keep working. We love to put on a show.” This gig was “a great jump” as the other bands were well established. The band did say, however, that “We feel we are up to it and would never turn down a challenge. This year we want to take all we can, no matter the scale. Pressure is good for us.”

In terms of future gigs, “We plan to play several gigs a month in 2023, with some big plans coming. Unfortunately, we can’t say too much about that now. We are excited. Gigs are so important. We want an audience to go home to sleep thinking about how good a night they just had.

So what is next for Telezura?

“Our future for 2023 is bright. We have plans to release debut singles, record live sessions and play gigs to the biggest scale possible. Beyond 2023, it would be brave to predict, but we hope we can be successfully playing massive gigs and having our songs on radios and in the charts. We only have eyes for the top. With work and creativity we feel we have a shot at it!
